Juergen Amling demonstrated several genealogy programs: The most popular "Family Tree Maker"; "TMG" the most powerful but also most challenging to learn; "PAF" (Personal Ancestral File) by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the Mormons); "Brother's Keeper"; "Legacy" Juergen's favorite program; and as a web based program "TNG" (The Next Generation of Genealogy Software).

 A.                 Software with the latest version number that I know of

1.      Family Tree Maker (15th edition) Ė most popular software with different priced versions from ca. $30 to $70, depending on the additional research CDís or DVDís included. No tryout of Software. Knowledgebase online but human support is only available per telephone (no e-mail) if you pay and is very expensive at $2 per minute. Here is there telephone Support policy:
Live phone support is available at $2.00 per minute. The phone number for live support is 800-326-8733. You will be billed for the time spent by the technical support representative on the phone answering your specific questions. Callers with issues pertaining to installation, converting data from a previous version or accessing online subscriptions may be eligible for free phone support by calling 801-705-7601 during the hours noted below (toll charges apply). Technical Support can be reached by phone Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 7 PM, and Saturday from 7 AM to 12 noon. All hours are Mountain Time, do not include holidays, and are subject to change.

2.      TMG (The Master Genealogist) 6.0. Very powerful software, but challenging to learn. Silver and Gold Edition. Starting price $34 for download version of Silver Edition to 79.95 for Gold Edition with delivery of CD and Manual. 30Day return policy.

3.      PAF (Personal Ancestral File) 5.2 Ė Free software published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons). Good software. Easy to learn. Different languages available. No support.

4.      Brotherís Keeper 6.2 One of the early shareware programs for $45. You can try it out and then pay. I donít know the support.

5.      Legacy 6.0 My favorite software. Free Standard version with some reports and a few functions disabled, but non the less good workable program. $29.95 for the Deluxe version download, or $39.95 for CD with manual.  Telephone support is free (but you have to pay the long distance charge, toll-free number only for sales). Very good free e-mail support.

6.      TNG (The Next Generation) 5.1.4 A different kind of software for the knowledgeable computer user. You can keep your data and publish them online and update them there. Or you can update it thru import of GEDCOM files from your home software (thatís what I do). Password protected if you want, limit data for living people if you want, etc. $29. No try out.

Juergen spoke in the last half hour about several free programs he had included on a CD-ROM that he distributed at a meeting. Most of these programs are free for non-commercial private use. Some are just simply free. Here is the list of the programs, we don't know how long the links to these sites will work and give no warranty on the workability of the programs downloaded from these links:

audacity-win-1.2.4b.exe: Program to record sounds that's sent to your speaker.

Fast Stone FSViewerSetup26.exe: Program to view and manipulate images in a variety of formats.

GoogleEarth.exe: Program by Google to see satellite images of the earth:

Ie7BETA.....: For advanced users. New Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3 Version. For the adventuras computer guy (or girl). Windows XP with Service Pack 2 required. Will check if Windows XP is a legal copy.

Image Resizer....: After the program is installed this PowerToy enables you to resize one or many image files with a right-click in a directory.

iview398.exe: A small but powerfull imageviewer: Program to record health issues of you and your family. Dr. Doucet spoke about it at one of the meetings:

Net Framework 1.1.exe: needed for My FamilyHealthPortrait:

Net Framework 2.0.exe: some newer programs need this installed. Added here so it doesn't have to be dowloadd wehen needed:

Open Office.....: Free replacement for Microsoft Office:

PAF5EnglishSetup.exe: Free genealogy program of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) to record your Family Data:

Picasa2-current.exe: Program (from Google) to catalog and find images on your computer:

ppviewer.exe: Viewer to read Microsoft PowerPoint files, if you don't have PowerPoint on your computer: Program to use the printkey on your keyboard to make a printout of your screen (like it used to do in the good old DOS days), or save the screen to a file. Very handy. Unfortunatly this program is not available for free anymore. There is another free printscreen program available at but I never tried this one:

SkypeSetup25.exe: If you have a broadband connection you can use your computer to telephone anyone in the world who has the same program on their computer for free. Within the USA you can call any phone number for free until December 31, 2006. Into most other countries you can call regular phones for about 2 Cents a minute (some are more). I use it all the time to call my German family. For clear connection a USB Phone is advisable (at Wal-Mart for about $25 - no I don't get a commission from Wal-Mart).

spybotsd14.exe: Anti-Spyware program (no you don't need to donate when asked, yes you can if you want to). Please be aware that there are several programs out that sound almost the same (the original one is "Spybot Search & Destroy") that require purchase and sometimes have be known to introduce spyware themself into computers :

Turbo Navigator 147 tn147setup.exe: Program to see directories on your computer side by side and move files between these directories.

VirtualPC.....: For advanced users only. The ability to run different operating systems within your Windows Program. Requires additional memory for the programs you run within Windows. For Windows XP and Windows 2000:

wdviewer.exe: Viewer to read Microsoft Word files, if you don't have Word on your computer:

xlviewer.exe: Viewer to read Microsoft Excel files, if you don't have Excel on your computer:
